Maarten Sietzema, a renowned designer, has created Luna, a smart bedside projector that aims to address the issue of sleep deprivation and enhance overall wellbeing. Inspired by the need for a distraction-free sleep environment, Luna projects moving patterns on the ceiling, creating a calming atmosphere that aids in falling asleep. With its multifunctional features, Luna is not just a projector but also a baby monitor and security camera, making it a versatile addition to any bedroom.
One of the key features of Luna is its ability to project moving patterns in colors known to have a calming effect. Research has shown that certain colors can help calm the mind and promote relaxation, making it easier to fall asleep. By incorporating these patterns, Luna creates a soothing environment that promotes a restful night's sleep.
Additionally, Luna's smart features make it a valuable tool for parents. The built-in camera serves as both a baby monitor and a security camera, allowing parents to keep an eye on their little ones while they sleep. The camera can detect movement and immediately play the moving patterns to entertain and soothe children until they fall asleep again. This feature not only helps children sleep better but also allows parents to get a longer, uninterrupted night's rest.
Luna's connectivity to a mobile app further enhances its functionality. Users can download the app and choose from a variety of moving patterns to project. The app also allows for customization of preferences, ensuring a personalized sleep experience. With voice control, users can even ask for projections of the time or check their unread text messages, adding convenience to Luna's already impressive array of features.
In terms of design, Luna strikes a balance between a friendly appearance suitable for a baby's room and a more sophisticated look for a master bedroom. The ABS injection-molded body, clear polycarbonate cover, and aluminum base contribute to its sleek and modern aesthetic. The base, designed with large surface area ribs, acts as a cooling mechanism for the projector, eliminating the need for a noisy fan.
With a diameter of 120 mm and a height of 180 mm, Luna is compact and unobtrusive, fitting seamlessly into any bedroom decor. Its portability is further enhanced by a built-in 7200 mAh battery, allowing for wireless use without the need for a power plug.
The Luna project began in December 2015 and was completed in February 2016 in Stuttgart, Germany. Throughout the design process, Sietzema faced the challenge of creating an experience rather than just a product. By incorporating functions that enhance the sleep and falling asleep process, Luna goes beyond being a simple projector and becomes a holistic solution for better sleep and wellbeing.
Luna's innovative design and commitment to improving sleep quality have earned it recognition in the design community. In 2016, Luna was awarded the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Digital and Electronic Device Design category. This award recognizes Luna's outstanding expertise, innovation, and ability to create positive feelings of amazement and wonder.
With Luna, Maarten Sietzema has successfully combined technology and design to create a product that not only enhances sleep but also promotes overall wellbeing. By providing a calming environment and multifunctional features, Luna is a valuable addition to any bedroom, ensuring a restful night's sleep for both adults and children.
